What Beats Do I Cover?

by Christopher Null  /  September 28, 2026

In my technology writing career, I get asked the question “what are you writing about?” so often that I decided, finally, to write up a list of my (somewhat random) coverage areas or beats, mostly for WIRED but also other outlets. Here’s a list that I’ll try to keep updated over time:

Christopher Null – beat list

  • Swimming pool gear, especially cleaning robots, but really anything that can be used in and around the pool
  • Hearing aids, over-the-counter and prescription, including hearing glasses
  • Laptops, all shapes and sizes
  • Portable monitors (not “standard” monitors, just portable)
  • Smart scales (bathroom, not kitchen)
  • Consumer-level home irrigation technology
  • Captioning eyeglasses
  • AI notetakers/transcription tools
  • Language translation tools
  • EMS workout suits
  • High-tech wellness solutions
  • Smart toothbrushes and other oral care items
  • Electric shavers/razors and other grooming equipment
  • Smart/new kitchen gear (air fryers, ice cream makers, popcorn makers, cocktail dispensers, icemakers, water filters, etc.)
  • Automotive technology (only at the consumer-level)
  • Any implementation of technology in the wine, beer, and spirits industry
  • Random household smart tech that would fit well in WIRED but which doesn’t fit well into a traditional category
